Home-Start has been active in Cornwall for since 2000 and continues to grow. Over the last 3 years we have supported 161 families by matching them with a local parent volunteer. Our volunteers visit their family weekly to offer practical and emotional support. Like many other charities we need to do our own fundraising alongside applying to larger grant funders to keep our income regular and our service sustainable. We are currently supporting over 40 families. At the moment our service is costing approximately £6000 per month paid from very limited reserves while we await the outcome of a Big Lottery Fund application.
Here is just one example of how we help.
Mum`s mental health had been deteriorating since the birth of twins and this resulted in her being sectioned out of county. The family had no family support network. Dad gave up work to care for the children and his wife when she came home. The family became isolated due to their situation. Dad became overwhelmed with his caring duties; routines had become chaotic. Mum had many appointments and money was an issue.
Their volunteer supported mum around her mental health issues by sharing some of her knowledge and life experience. She encouraged mum to keep up contact with her mental health team and to resume painting to relax. Simple trips out with the volunteer to the park meant that mum could take the first tentative steps back into the local community. During visits dad could take time out for himself and he was able to talk to the volunteer about his own feelings. The family were supported to access benefits including two-year nursery funding. Mum was able to feel like she once again had an active role in the family. Eventually dad retrained and now works full time. Mum has become an artist and sells her work in galleries countywide.
