Heatherley School of Fine Art

Charity description

Founded in 1845, Heatherley’s is one of London’s great independent art schools, dedicated to teaching and inspiring the artists of tomorrow.  Independent in governance and spirit, it upholds a traditional ‘from life’ practice, whilst nurturing originality and self-expression.
 Heatherley’s occupies its own purpose-built school in the heart of Chelsea. It runs 2-year Diploma courses in portraiture and sculpture, and a huge range of part-time courses. In 2017, after rigorous review, the British Accreditation Council gave Heatherley’s its fullest endorsement.
 The school’s 8 studios are constantly busy, and courses over-subscribed. Many students and established artists maintain their connection to the school, returning year after year to take Open Studio classes.
Our ethos at Heatherley’s is a total commitment to the emancipating, transformative power of art; our belief in creating opportunity at all levels, for all ages and all backgrounds to become artists, or to enjoy learning and self-expression.
We award bursaries to talented students who cannot afford the fees. We run outreach programmes and we make a contribution as a cultural resource for  schools and the wider community.

Our success today fuels our ambitions for tomorrow. Our key aims are :
  • To Increase our Bursary Fund and award more bursaries to more students on Diploma Courses;
  • To Expand our Building – adding extra studio space at roof level, allowing us to widen our offer and run more classes open to all.
The Bursary Fund: Our Bursary Fund provides around £50,000 every year towards fees on Diploma Courses. The fund has been supplemented over the years by fund-raising, individual donations and contributions from the School’s operating surplus.
 We want to double our bursaries by reaching our target of £100,000 a year to disburse.

The Capital Appeal: 10 years ago when the School was built, the plans allowed for upward extension to accommodate 2 additional studios. We are located at the heart of a major redevelopment by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. This convergence provides a window of opportunity for civic partnership between school and private capital to expand the school and its offer.
Our target is to raise £1.8 million in the next 2 years.

Please SUPPORT US and make a difference to the education of the arts in London.
