Gareloch Group Riding For The Disabled Association SCIO

Charity description

Gareloch Group Riding For The Disabled Association SCIO logo
Gareloch Group Riding for the Disabled Association SCIO was founded in 1976 and is a registered charity, affiliated to national RDA. We cater for some adults, but our riders are mainly children and young people. Our riders have a wide range of disabilities which may be physical or learning disabilities – sometimes a combination of both. Some riders are able to attend weekly, and some come on a fortnightly basis.

Gareloch Group RDA SCIO operates with the support of Colgrain Equestrian Centre, this ensures we have the use of both indoor and outdoor facilities which means that we can run our sessions throughout the year. In recent months we have purchased two horses which are extremely suitable for use by riders of a range of sizes, and with a range of disabilities and which are being used exclusively for RDA riders. We have also expanded this approach by taking on the long term loan of a third horse. The availability of horses of suitable size and temperament is crucial to provide opportunities for the widest range of riders and this new approach has allowed us to extend the number of sessions which we offer.

The sessions are staffed entirely by volunteers. In total we have over 50 regular helpers who undertake a range of tasks. Since the establishment of the Branch we have extended the number of our sessions from an initial one per week to the current seven sessions.
