For Ava Foundation
Inspired by our own family journey through childhood cancer, we raise money to fund 'Be There' boxes. Our boxes contain treats & essentials to help support children & their families whilst in isolation, but most importantly to let them know that people are thinking of them and they are not alone.
There are approximately 50 transplants at Manchester & 6 to 8 at Alder Hey, per year. We need your help to raise £6000.00 a year to achieve our aims to Be There for families affected by cancer & bone marrow/stem cell transplants.
Our daughter Ava has battled cancer twice. At just 1 year old she was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma, a rare liver cancer which had spread to her lungs. She had intensive chemotherapy & lung surgery at Alder Hey and eventually underwent a liver transplant at Birmingham Children's Hospital in August 2014. Sadly she became unwell again in May 2016 and was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.
In order to cure the leukaemia she underwent a lifesaving stem cell transplant at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in July 2016. Thankfully she is now doing well.
Ava spent much of her treatment for both cancers, in isolation, which is incredibly difficult for a child, but also impacts heavily on the whole family.
During transplantation, the isolation period is around 6-8 weeks & is especially tough, not least because the process itself can be brutal. Finding ways to keep your child entertained & distracted from the process, is hard.
Each ‘Be There’ box is bespoke for the child/young person receiving it, ensuring they have items to make them smile, keep them entertained & hopefully provide much needed distraction. The boxes also contain vouchers for parents/carers & siblings to help with living costs or towards a special treat.
We also aim support children with cancer by funding items for the oncology ward & special one off treats. In the past 12 months we've purchased Dyson Fans & TVs for Manchester Children's & donated over 300 advent calendars, including many toy calendars, to the Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant wards at both Alder Hey & Manchester hospital.
