Fair Close Centre, Newbury, Berkshire

Charity description

Fair Close Centre, Newbury, Berkshire logo
Fair Close Centre, operated by Age Concern Newbury and District is an important community facility for West Berkshire as it provides an opportunity for Senior Citizens to meet friends over morning tea/coffee, have lunch and take part in activities such as Arts and Craft, Knit and Natter, Bingo and Whist.

Our Charity which receives no public funding, was formed in the early 1960's, its objectives being to encourage, promote and organise direct services appropriate to the needs of older people. We serve the West Berkshire community, although our membership is mainly, from Newbury and Thatcham. In November 1967, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, opened our newly builtcommunity centre, Fair Close.
Fair Close, is in daily use and comprises a main Dining room/Hall, Kitchen, Sitting
room with an adjacent tea kitchen, Craft room, and offices. We also have a Charity
shop and Hairdressing salon as well as a visiting chiropodist. We organise day outings
and holidays.
The focus of the centre is the dining hall, where providing a freshly cooked, nourishing
mid-day meal is central to our work. We also operate a "Meals on Wheels" service, whereby volunteers deliver a hot, freshly cooked meal to the housebound senior citizen.
We are not just a day centre; we are a community hub where we help alleviate loneliness,
provide a place for friends to meet and friendships made, bring together people of different ages and abilities and provide nutritious meals.
