Colchester Archaeological Trust Ltd

Charity description

Colchester Archaeological Trust Ltd logo
The Colchester Archaeological Trust (CAT) was founded in 1963 to research and promote the history and archaeological remains of the historic Roman and later town of Colchester.

Support is needed to develop our recently-established visitor centre for Britain's only-known Roman circus. The remains were discovered during archaeological excavations by the Trust in 2004. The building was designed for chariot racing. A quarter of a mile long, it could accommodate about 8,000 spectators.
Our plan is an ambitious one worthy of this extraordinary discovery. We want to create a place where people of all ages can find out about this amazing building in an exciting and engaging way.
Currently we hope to raise £5,000 as seed-funding for a grant of £50,000 for a full-size four-horse Roman chariot with charioteer. Nearby would be a matching outline of spectators sitting in the stand. Chariot and outline would be made by the well-known British sculptor and mosaic artist, Anne Schwegmann-Fielding.
Every little donation makes a big difference. A gift of only £5 can translate into £50!
Please visit our website for details about the project and the unique Roman Circus Centre.
