Abbey Gym Club
Abbey Gym Club is a community gymnastics club based in Prestwood, Buckinghamshire since 1984. We currently provide gymnastics tuition for 230 children and young people aged 3-19. We have a waiting list of around 300 children, who will spend 2-3 years on the waiting list.
We are raising money to build a new gymnastics centre that will enable us to reduce our waiting list, include other age groups, e.g. parents and toddlers, and provide a legacy for the local community.
Thanks to the support of our local councillors and local community, we have been granted planning permission for our new building.
We now need to raise around £1.4m to build our dream.
Our Club has operated out of the school hall at Prestwood Junior School for about 25 years. This operating model gives us three major constraints:
- The hall size is smaller than a gymnastics floor area, and is also smaller than the minimum size recommended by British Gymnastics, so we can only offer a limited range of equipment for our gymnasts, and can accommodate a restricted number of gymnasts;
- We can only hire the school hall three evenings per week plus all day Saturday, thus restricting the numbers of gymnasts that can be accommodated in classes;
- Our equipment must be set up at the beginning of every session and taken down again at the end of every session; this takes 30-45 minutes for set-up and the same for put-away, and creates excess wear and tear on both our equipment and our volunteers.
